A demure redheaded girl sleeps upon a large bed at Austrian artist, Lies Maculan's photo installation. Her dreams displayed in forms of everyday items symbolizing all we desire: to fly, to be beautiful, to exceed expectations (a mannequins underwear is stuffed to make him "larger" then normal). Being dreams, the items remain intangible existing as photographs on realistic shelves. Hosts, fashion designer Erin Fetherston, Arden Wohl and KiptonART's Kipton Cronkite socialized with guests including Lucy Sykes, event orchestrator Susan Shin, Euan Rellie, Lady Liliana Cavendish, Craig Robinson, Countess LuAnn Lesseps, Chessy Wilson, artist Ellen von Unwerth, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Lara Meiland-Shaw and Mia Morgan in the though provoking atmosphere.

KiptonART ART TALK with socialite and star of MTV's Blonde Charity Mafia, Katherine Kennedy

Who are your favorite KiptonART artists? Why?
Having always been compelled towards the beauty of mixed media, I was awe struck by the use of color in the works of Vivian Rosenthal. I fould such a depth in Ana Heaton's Red Abstract Number 3 that was second to none. I was quite taken by Jill Tauzin Broussard's remarkable work with oil on wood. Her work in 23 circles would find a home in my living room with such vibrant colors to warm its surroundings. Of all of the work witnessed, I must admit I fell in love with Alchemical Balance by Paul Seftel for his astounding use of transformative color on a textural piece of promise. Intrigued by both his method and talent, I look forward to reading about his continued success and owning a piece in the near future.

Weekend Art Picks, New York

Lies Maculan's "The Dream Shop"
March 11th through March 31st
30 W. 21st, New York, NY By Appointment

Aptly named "The Dream Shop", the photo-realistic room installation houses over one hundred dreams, desires and wishes that have been objectified and placed in wooden shelves. This large-scale installation occupies an entire room as an integral whole but also can be broken down shelf by shelf. The deliberate arrangement of objects relative to one another and the printing of the photographs in the subjects original size give the installation a three dimensionality while the below eye-level prespective imparts a surrealistic experience.
To arrange an appointment please contact a KiptonART representative at info@kiptonart.com

KiptonART ART TALK with Author Eve Pell

Who are your favorite KiptonART artists? Why?

Kiritin Beyer: For the mix of dignity and intimacy that pervades her subjects, whether old people in the Pyrenees or children in (what looks to be) Southeast Asia. She connects with the people in her gallery, and so do I --even though I will never meet them. I am glad she has documented their lives and their culture.

Ronzo Ortega: What a wonderful mix of ancient and modern! He imbues his mythic scenes and people with a Byzantine ethos; his use of color and form convey power and depth of feeling. I wanted to see more.

Jade Doskow: I am moved by the powerful interplay of forms in her photos and strong sense of place that comes through. She discerns the drama inherent in structures that positively explode from the frame. And she pulls the viewer into the scenes, so that I feel that I am sharing her amazing vision.

KiptonART ART TALK with Doug Rosenblum

Who are your favorite KiptonART artists? Why?
I would have to say Mike Rohner is my favorite KiptonART artist. Like me, he uses New York as an inspiration for his work. His color palette, clean lines and detail capture even the simplest New York scene with sophistication and elegance.

What is the last exhibition you attended?
"The Subject is Women: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism" at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, Long Island.

How would you describe the decor in your home?
My home decor is a Tuscan feel with a splash of prep country club heritage.

What artists most inspire or influence you?
Ralph Lauren inspires me most. As A bespoke tailor, I can appreciate his choice of design, pattern, color, and fabric used in his "high end" suit line "Black Label". Details such as high armholes, which allow for easy movement and a slightly structured shoulder, achieve a modern, comfortable fit that is always in style.

Meet Hit Singer Paula Valstein

At the moment, Paula Valstein can't walk on the street of her native Tel-Aviv without getting noticed. The reason being is that Paula, who now calls New York City her home, has been a participant on the highest rated television program in Israel, a sort of American Idol reality show whose name translates to A Star Is Born. Paula clinched Best Performance honors and it's made her a household name all over that country. All of this is exciting, of course, but also quite surreal considering that just a few weeks back, she played to a packed house, but at NYC's cool and intimate venue, The Rockwood Music Hall.

The Armory Show
The heavyweight of New York fairs started on a high note this year as dealers reported strong sales during Wednesday's Preview and a note of optimism rippled through the art world press... A group of noteworthy newcomers to the fair this year is comprised of LES galleries Eleven Rivington (936), Rental (741), and Lisa Cooley (706), each meeting with encouraging success in their respective Armory debuts.

SCOPEMike Weiss Gallery (D18) offers four large-scale sculpture works by Chinese artist Liao Yibai with an inventive take on the luxury market; at Gagliardi Art System (A13) two haunting multimedia installations by Daniel Glaser and Magdalena Kunz drew a steady stream of onlookers; and Munich-based Galerie von Braunbehrens (C10) reminded us of the many talented painters in the Contemporary market through the works of Jaime Sunico, Andy Denzler, and Kim Dong-Yoo.

Who/what is your biggest inspiration right now?
This is a difficult question for me because my parents are on my mind right now. My dad just had a stroke and was paralyzed down the entire left side of his body. That's made me think a lot about what I do every day - and I'm inspired by that situation. I've also been watching the Olympics because I've always been inspired by competition. Making art is not competitive for me, because it's a personal endeavor, but I enjoy seeing the euphoria on the faces of people who win a medal. I see how happy they are when they experience that moment when they realize they've achieved their goal - it's a different sensation for me, but that's the kind of feeling I have when I understand that a painting is complete.

Emerging Designers of Artistic Form

The Whitney Biennial opened last week showcasing Americas top emerging artists. The Biennial is ridding the coattails of New York Fashion Week, which featured a great deal of American emerging designers. Hundreds aspired to present their line in front of the influential press, buyers and guests with the hopes of being noticed.

If  you're lucky like Timo Weiland, it will happen sooner than later. Flipping through this month's Elle, a satin ruffled skirt is paired with a cotton button down top. The shirt from GAP is $50, the skirt $2,200. Weiland designed that skirt. Not bad for only presenting his second collection this past Fashion Week ( more impressive is that the skirt is from his first)....

"Back from Haiti" - KiptonART Rising 2010 Winner Kiritin Beyer Shares Her Experience

KiptonART Rising 2010 Winner Kiritin Beyer traveled down to Haiti less than two weeks after the devastating earthquake. Beyer acts as a photo-journalist documenting the lives of citizens around the world. Here is her story:

"On January 22nd I was able to join a team of nurses, doctors, rescue workers, sanitation helpers and volunteers flying down to Port au Prince, Haiti. When we got there, my first job was to feed the patients in one of the two main hospitals. Some patients had not eaten any food for days and were dying of nutrition and dehydration problems rather than untreated wounds. I worked every day at the hospital. There were not enough nurses leaving doctors without extra hands. I transported patients from the operating tent back to the recovery tent. Before I left, one of the nurses put me in charge of taking X-Rays. Hundreds of patients arrived everyday for treatment..."

"There's a hurricane of snow going on outside," announced Lydia Fenet at last night's Frick Young Fellows Ball. "So many people showed up! It shows how hearty New Yorkers are, how great our friends are, and how much fun they have at the Frick." Indeed, as the 630 guests glided effortlessly into the museum's Garden Court, the only hint of ice was the stunning jewels donated for the evening by Tiffany & Co. The other half of the ball's Diamond Deco theme was personified by Elisabeth Saint-Amand and Coralie Charriol Paul, who donned custom 1930's headpieces to complement their Vera Wang gowns.

KiptonART Featured Artist: Mike Rollins

The work of New York-based artist Mike Rollins uses the lingual abstraction created by the daily stock market ticker as its main formal and conceptual grounding. The codes and morphology inherent to the stock ticker system are often impossible for the general population to parse. By using a combination of real and imagined stock symbols, Rollins creates a new language - one whose nature is cryptic, yet with a purpose that is implicitly communicative. Fragments of words are combined into new proverbial text borrowed from such disparate sources as poetry, entertainment tropes, and modern colloquialisms.

Edwin Olaf at the Hasted Hunt Kraeutler Gallery

Edwin Olaf's new exhibition Hotel, Dusk and Dawn currently at the Hasted Hunt Kraeutler Gallery in New York features work from his new series. Nothing short of romantic with an aire of disconnect, his carefully sculpted photographs touch on a dream like state constructed by the photographer. The statuesque quality of the photographs' models portray a somewhat "cut and paste" effect, where they stand out beyond their environment. The play between light and dark serves a similar purpose, heightening the dramatic sense of mystery present throughout.

Hotel, Dusk and Dawn is open through March 20th, 2010 at the Hasted Hunt Kraeutler Gallery, 537 West 24th Street, New York, NY.  Read KiptonART's recent interview with Hasted Hunt Kraeutler here with owners Joseph Kraeutler, Sarah Hasted and Bill Hunt.
