Weekend Art Picks, New York

Reflections at Barry Friedman Ltd.

In this exhibition, the Japanese artist Takahiro Kondo displays 25 casts of his face and head. Kondo's gintekisai glaze technique may share roots with the traditional Kyoto blue-and-white porcelain of his grandfather, but this is a modern interpretation. The combination of his classic background and experimentation with new media influences this new series of work. Each cast's unique decorations reference themes from his past work while the technique used explore the ideas of man's relationship with his ecosystem. Although the water-like finish of Kondo's ginteksai  glaze explores humanity's relationship with nature and the tranquility of the elements other casts glazed with gold and precious metals draw attention to our more materialistic inclinations. Reflections is on view from November 12, 2010 through January 22, 2011. Barry Friedman Ltd. is located at 515 West 26th Street. Read this Weekend's Art Picks
