Weekend Art Picks, Identity Crisis

Death of A King at Praxis International Art
In his first solo exhibit at Praxis, Shaun El C. Leonardo presents a series of self-portraits, paintings and drawings, exploring his masculinity. He installs hulking plywood figures against ominous murals on the gallery's walls. Every flexed muscle is vividly depicted in a comic-book superhero style painted with a camouflage motif. Although the bodies appear virile, the face tell another story. The figures' painted expressions indicate frailty and defeat. Have these men been conquered despite their seeming strength? Or can they still be the conqueror?
