Phillips de Pury Auction: Photographs, April 16th

Phillips de Pury Auction House, the Chelsea answer to Christie's and Sotheby's, rolled out another impressive array of photographs for its 2010 sale, held on April 16th. With works ranging from iconic Irving Penn fashion portraits to old and familiar Mapplethorpe shots to new and little-known East Asian artists, the auction offered works at levels of price and renown to satisfy a range of collectors. While yet another William Wegman doggy might have seemed bland and so 1990 to a young buyer, it may have been the missing piece in a more established patron's collection. On the other hand, a David LaChapelle color print entitled Addicted to Diamonds (1997), a standout in the large grouping of LaChapelle's in the auction, depicted a naked blonde snorting diamonds instead of cocaine.
