Catch a Glimpse of Abi Ferrin
Inspired by her work with the Costa Rica-based Rainforest Recovery Initiative, Abi Ferrin’s most recent ready-to-wear and swimwear collection, which she showed in New York last week, featured hand-painted tropical prints and waterfall-like structural effects. This December, Ferrin will travel back to Costa Rica to train women who live in the area to help create parts of the line. Ferrin says her goal is to empower women in need by teaching them marketable skills and giving them an independent source of income.

Off the Wall at the Royalton
The downtown art scene moved to midtown last night as David LaChapelle and Whitewall Magazine transformed the Royalton Hotel in a chick nightclub overflowing with everyone from coll kid Aimee Phillips to art-world heavyweights Paul Kasmin and Andres Serrano. LaChapelle was on hand to celebrate the launch of Whitewall's Fall 2009 Issue, which features him alongside Karl Lagerfeld, John Chamberlain, and Peter Brant.Click Here to Read More...

KiptonART Featured Artist Julie Combal has exhibited in New York City, Paris, France and Japan. Combal's work is in private collections around the world, and she recently completed a print-making fellowship at the Manhattan Graphics Center in New York City. Please enjoy what she has to share about her current work and take this opportunity to read her answers to the five questions we ask every artist.
"My current projects focus on the discordance between the chaotic, beautiful natural world and the human desire to control and challenge it. I am looking at nature, natural disasters and weather and their effect on man. I focus on the elements of light, texture and color to create an atmosphere wherein on e meditates on the beauty of the natural elements while also reflecting on the tension between man and his natural environment." -Julie Combal

Tom Sachs Inspired By James Brown
Tom Sachs, artist and sculptor, gave a tour to the Whitney Artists Council yesterday evening where he guided members throughout his studio including a conversation around his latest series focusing on musician James Brown. Most who know Sachs, think about images of Hello Kitty and remember stories of his infamous Space Program at Larry Gagosian’s Beverly Hills gallery in 2007. This energetic, and handsome, 43 year-old gave hope that the art world is not dead. Sachs demonstrated how he completed an incredible series of intricate installations around Mr. Brown’s personal memorabilia including a fully operating music system, sit down hair dryer (like your grandma’s) and an open briefcase displaying an authentic James Brown passport purchased at auction. Whitney patrons Joanne Cassullo, Lisa Anastos, Patti Kim, Allison Wiener, Cecilia Wolfson and Philae Knight were among the members who rolled out to share in this special opportunity. At the of the evening, there was talk about how quickly tickets to the Whitney Studio Party on October 19 are selling so if the Sachs studio visit was any indication of what’s to come, the Whitney will have another sellout and massive party for art-loving New Yorkers.

Where the Wild Gnomes Are
Just recently I was invited to Gnome World, an installation by a friend of KiptonART, Michael Fredo. This art piece was not in a gallery space or art museum and did not reside in a collector's home, I was heading to the artist's apartment/recording studio. This was intriguing to me as I have always had a soft spot for Gnomes since my 4th grade teacher introduced me to Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet's Gnomes. Fredo's apartment was small and tidy with nothing out of the ordinary except a wall full of recording equipment. I could see the kitchen and bathroom and there wasn't much else. Where was Gnome World?

Final Fashion Cho
By the end of Fashion Week, we are all downtrodden. Collections blur into one another and that extra glass of champagne is probably no longer the best idea, or it may be the only way to get through the last round of shows. For the final moments some may need something with a slower pace, perhaps reaching to a niche of clientele other than the young fashionistas. This is exactly what Cho Cheng presented for his 2010 Spring/Summer looks last Thursday. As you entered the intimate space of the Salon at Bryant Park, the room was filled with a calming dim blue lighting that would enhance the themes of Cheng's collection. School of Visual Arts (SVA) Creating Annual Award for Female Photographers
This week, Kipton Cronkite sat down with Stephen Frailey, Chair of the Photography Department at New York's School of Visual Arts (SVA) and Editor-in-Chief for Dear Dave Magazine. Mr. Frailey explained how SVA has created an online auction honoring Tracey Baran, a young SVA photographer who died last year. At only 33, Baran had been compared to Nan Goldin and Ryan McGinley and reputation soared before her death. Baran had six solo shows, including a major exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago in 2002. The proceeds of the online auction will create an award which SVA will give to a young female photographer from the U.S. each year. To view the photograph by Tracey Baran and bid in the online auction, there are only 11 days left so hurry before it's too late. Read more here...Join KiptonART Fan Page on Facebook!

Ralph Rucci Steals the Shows, Butterfly Effect at Vivienne Tam
I need to be honest. Saturday night I experienced something so moving and inspiring tears began to stream down my face. I fully understand why fashion can be an art form. Though I have argued this point with professors and fellow peers in the past, I’ve never had personal accounts to back up my claim: until this moment. Chado Ralph Rucci presented the performance of New York Fashion Week that ended with a standing ovation by audience members such as Martha Stewart and Vogue’s Editor at Large Andre Leon Talley. Genius On Keyboards Storms the Charts
Tonight I heard 22-year-old Grammy nominated jazz pianist, Eldar Djangirov, perform to a packed audience at the Jazz Standard in NYC. I received news that “Virtue”, Eldar’s eagerly anticipated follow-up to his 2008 Grammy nominated “Re-Imagination”, is currently #17 on the Top Billboard Jazz Chart and #1 CMJ most added artist. Over the last week, Eldar and his band mates Armando Gola and Ludwig Afonso have performed a series of performances in New York and a private performance for over 300 patrons who attended the KiptonART Foundation event with partners ELLE and Longchamp. Not since my childhood memories of keyboard spasms from hot bands from the 80s, have I felt such attraction to a performer who handles the keyboard as naturally as eating and breathing. I continue to be mesmerized by how easily and quickly Eldar's fingers roll across the keyboard. The classical training by his mother and influence from his father's love of jazz, has given Eldar a unique sound and style that continues to garner critical acclaim. During the performance, I also chatted with singer Paula Valstein who recently was a contestant on "Kochav Nolad," Israel's version of "American Idol.” Although eliminated from the competition on August 2, she has hit the U.S. music circuit full force. This evening, she explained how she just returned from performing for students at Pepperdine University in Malibu. No doubt the students were amazed by Valstein's ability to connect and charm while creating pleasurable experiences of bone chilling vocals that stick in your head for days. After Eldar finalized his set, we sat down for Q&A to talk about what was on his mind and what he has planned next. I called it a night after mingling with Producer David Lai, ICM's Mitch Blackman and multi-talented Kirk Yano. Read the full interview here...

I was planning the gallery for many years, and I finally reached a place where I had a number of artists with whom I really wanted to work. One day I went to the Lower East Side to get a sense of the types of spaces and prices, so when I found my space on Orchard, I knew it was going to be the place where all this experimentation could play out. Yigal Azrouƫl & Luca Luca Spring 10 Collection
Friday’s rain was the perfect opportunity to pull out my leather biker boots, fitting right in with the cool styles of Israeli designer Yigal AzrouĆ«l. I have a soft spot for AzrouĆ«l, as his last season was the first Bryant Park show I ever attended. His line is reminiscent to the original street styles of Tel Aviv with layered lightweight tops and paneled pants. Karen Eldad, who was decked out in the designer’s dress, noted that, “Yigal clearly understands a woman’s body.” This season he revealed more body conscious looks than ever before.

The Wintour-Woman Cometh

Another world exists backstage at Bryant Park during fashion week. Emotions seemingly run higher than the towering Louboutins. The players are caught in a frenzy with aggressive photographers rampant on voyeuristic pursuits, while sleep-deprived designers stress over the details on a finished garment. A parade of frocks, tights, tulle and jumpers are in line to go marching down the aisle and McGrath-ist artists paint faces on the quiet match-stick-thin girls from global countries of Belarus and Brazil. A nervous voice perks up in a sea of murmurs, "has Anna arrived yet?" The chaos slows down, and the question is repeated with the greatest sense of urgency while a shot of the iconic bobbed woman flashes on the screen.

I christened the first official day of fashion week, on Thursday, with the Monique Lhuillier spring/summer 2010 collection at the auction house Christie's. Recently opened at the Peter Blum Gallery in New York, Alex Katz: Drawings features 26 of Katz's "finished drawings". Carter Radcliff describes these drawings as "paintings in black and white". Featured subjects are Katz's wife Ada, friends and family, models and famous figures in the art world. Katz is all about the crop of an image, and to him, "appearance is much more interesting than how I feel about something… The emphasis is on the optical.” Don't miss these works that have not been previously shown in New York. Etant donnes
Quoted by Jasper Johns as "one of the strangest works of art in any museum", Etant donnes: 1 la chute d'eau, 2 le gaz d'eclairage celebrates it 40th anniversary of it's public unveiling and installation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This was a surprise gift to the museum, in accordance with Duchamp's wishes, it joined one of the largest collections of his works. The doors may seem simple enough, but the experience is all too memorable once you "peep" through the two little holes in the center of the door.In celebration of this anniversary, the museum presents the first exhibition to study the genesis, construction and reception of Duchamp's final masterwork. With over 100 works, Etant donnes pulls together an extraordinary assemblage of related works including books, works on paper and photographs.
For over 20 years Duchamp worked in secrecy on this assemblage, not until after his death was it discovered in his studio. This work is untranslatable via photograph or written word. It is an unforgettable experience that can only be Duchamp. This exhibition will be at the Philadelphia Museum of Art through November 29, 2009.

The Torment of St. Anthony... catch it before it's gone
Michelangelo's first painting is on display at the Metropolitan Museum through this coming Monday. Definitely a treat to see "a first" of this great master(as so claimed by his biographer). Michelangelo's The Torment of St. Anthony is a copy of a famous engraving by artist Martin Schongauer. The painting has been under much scrutiny due to discoloring varnish and over paints. To accompany this masterpiece is a technical examination and scholarly analysis done by the museums conservators and curators. Take a bit of time this holiday weekend to escape to a place of "firsts" and try and imagine where he was thinking this would take him.Above, The Torment of Saint Anthony, ca. 1487–88. Shifiting Time Zones
It's unfortunate that we have to see the doors of Galleria Emi Fontana close for good, but we are given quite a treat with the Milan-based gallery's final exhibition. A solo show by installation artist Liliana Moro, one of the first artists that the gallery represented and exhibited in its first year back in 1992, will bring a final applause to an innovative venue.Emi Fontana is switching time zones and will be bringing her talent and charm to Los Angeles, next stop, West of Rome. The West of Rome organization is an alternative to standard museum and gallery spaces and explores a span of urban spaces. Each exhibition/installation/event is presented in a venue that speaks to it's needs and depends on the nature of the each artist's project.
