Art Review: Contemporary Pakistan in NYC

Hanging Fire: Contemporary Art from Pakistan
September 10, 2009 - January 3, 2010
Asia Society & Museum, 725 Park Avenue

Curated by Salima Hashmi, also a Pakistani artist, the exhibit features the works of 15 artists. Standout pieces include "A Visit to the Inner Sanctum 1-4" by Zahoor ul Akhlaq; the colorful paintings of Anwar Saeed; "Red Carpet 1" by Rashid Rana; "High Rise: Lake City Drive" by Huma Mulji; and the collection of motorcycle headgear by Adeela Suleman. The museum prides itself on being the first in the US to highlight exclusively contemporary Pakistani art. Despite the fact that the overall theme reasserts the perception of Pakistan as an oppressed and divided nation, it is a unique experience that should not be missed.
